St. Catherine AME Zion Church Striving to Act Justly, Love Mercy and Walk Humbly with God!

Our Ministries

Acolytes participate in the worship service by carrying a processional cross and lighting and extinguishing the Altar Candles.  Before lighting the candles the Acolytes bow at the altar.  This is an expression of humility and symbolizes Jesus coming into the presence of the worshiping community.  Prior to leading the recessional at the end of the worship experience, the Acolytes relight their candle lighter.  This symbolizes the light of Jesus Christ going out into the world where believers are called to serve.

Caring and Sharing Ministry

The Caring and Sharing Ministry of St. Catherine A.M.E. Zion Church has been a vital part of the Missionary Outreach in the Church for over twenty years.  Our objective is to reach those in the community that are in need of food for the body and soul, and provide them the opportunity to visit our Open Closet.

The Missionaries meet on the fourth Saturday of each month to prepare a hot meal, complete with dessert,  that will be served on the fourth Sunday to poor and homeless citizens in the New Rochelle area.  We set the tables for our guests with love, and place tracts on each table.  Sometimes our guests attend morning service then break bread in our Fellowship Hall with the congregation.  Our guests have been known to offer the prayer, say grace or give their testimony during this fellowship experience.

After they have eaten all they want, we fill their bags with shoes, clothing and household goods. The doors of St. Catherine AME Zion Church are open to all, and The Caring and Sharing Ministry has no Doors  -  all are welcome.

Culinary Ministry

Fellowship and breaking bread together is a key part of the Christian experience in the life of the church.  We at St. Catherine integrate dining and fellowship into a number of our services and programs.  The meals provided, which frequently include four courses, are prepared by the dedicated members of the culinary ministry.  These members can often be found early in the morning and late in the evening preparing meals for our members and guests so that they may use the nutrition for the building of their bodies to help them better engage in the building of His kingdom.  This ministry is led by Gerry Flowers and Shirley Brock.

Dance Ministry

“Let them praise His name in the dance…To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron.” (Psalm 149:3,8)

“Praising the Lord through dance is a spiritual principle that, when followed, yields rewards similar to tithing.  When we follow God’s command to dance and offer our bodies as living sacrifices to Him, God opens up the windows of Heaven, pours out His blessing, and manifests His anointing in the midst of us.  Sickness, poverty, and failure have to flee as the anointing destroys the yokes of bondage, and the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of God.”  (author unknown)

Music Ministry

Psalm 150:6  -  “Let everything that hath breath PRAISE THE LORD.  PRAISE YE THE LORD.”

The Music Ministry of St. Catherine is looking to praise God through the gift of music.  We hope to use our voices and instruments to reach not only our present congregation but also as a vehicle to introduce our community to Christ and our church.  God uses each voice and instrument to come together to enhance and assist the pastor to bring the Word, as the Word is our ultimate goal in the worship experience.  The music ministry is determined to allow the spirit to be a part of everything we do.  As we sing we are praying, as we work for a common sound we are working on the common goal for Christ and allowing souls to know of His goodness.  Our mission of assisting to bring souls to Christ is accomplished through the different genres of music; gospel, spirituals, anthems and liturgical dance.  As stated in Psalm 150:6 – “Praise the Lord, Praise Ye the Lord” – we come together through the medium of music to Praise Him for and with our gifts.
